15-Passenger Vans the Most Dangerous Vehicle on Missouri Roads

Does your organization use a 15-passenger van? If so, then you are no stranger to the differences between driving a van and a car. If you are new to the oversized van, you have a lot to learn.

The most obvious difference is that 15-passenger vans are clearly not anywhere near as safe as your typical passenger vehicle. Even when traveling without passengers, the vans can be unsafe. But when passengers and cargo are added, the vans become a mobile nightmare for an inexperienced driver. Because vans cost considerably less to rent than buses, they have become more and more popular with churches, sports teams and community organizations.

Passenger vans drive differently from smaller vehicles. Because they are typically much higher, wider and longer than an average car, they are more prone to a rollover accident than many other vehicles. Passenger vans require the driver's complete attention as well as better use of the side-view mirrors for changing lanes. They need to maintain more space between other vehicles for braking, larger parking spaces and higher parking garages.

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggests the following ways to prevent accidents in 15-passenger vans:

  • Only properly trained and well rested drivers should be behind the wheel
  • Check the tires for proper inflation
  • Every passenger in the van should be buckled and remain buckled throughout the ride
  • Drive according to the speed limit
  • Don't overload the van with cargo
  • Inspect the van every time it is driven

With each accident we are learning that 15-passenger vans may just be the most dangerous vehicles on the road when it comes to serious injuries or death related to a motor vehicle accident. In fact, the NHTSA now prohibits schools from transporting students in 15-passenger vans. If your organization travels by 15-passenger van, familiarize yourself with the dangers they represent and encourage the use of another, safer vehicle if the driver is unfamiliar with their safe operation.

If you or a loved one were injured in a passenger van accident, a Missouri auto accident attorney can explain your right to compensation for medical and related expenses.
