Topamax, sold generically as Topiramate, is a drug manufactured by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceuticals. It is commonly used to treat seizures associated with epilepsy but has also been sold for a variety of "off label" uses including migraine headaches and even weight loss. Topamax has been on the market since the late 1990's and it is estimated over 800,000 people have been prescribed the medication. Back in 2006 the FDA issued a warning to the public about some of the potential side effects of Topamax including serious eye disorders such as glaucoma and myopia. More disturbing is the FDA's recent action in March of 2011 in which it announced it would require the manufacturer of this drug to strengthen the warning it provides to consumers because of the known dangers of taking this medication while pregnant. The use of Topamax during pregnancy has been associated with various birth defects including cleft palates, cleft lips and genital defects.
